Interior design direction: bringing an existing team together

A reference becomes more useful when its attraction is understood. Was it the proportion of the room, the warmth of timber, the way light fell on a wall, or the invitation to sit and talk? Those qualities can survive a change of supplier more readily when they are stated clearly.

Identify what is approved and what is still developing. An existing team may already have solved much of the project. Reviewing current drawings, material selections and forthcoming commitments makes it possible to focus attention where it is needed.

The aim is a direction the team can use: which relationships give the room its character, what the client values, and which choices need further work.

Consider, as an illustrative example, a supplier proposing a deeper display cabinet. The extra depth may be useful, yet alter the route past it, the line of an adjoining panel and the way an integrated light falls.

The proposal becomes easier to judge when its dimensions appear on the current plan, alongside the adjoining work. The client can see what changes in the room’s proportions, while the responsible specialists examine the affected interfaces. That creates a useful basis for deciding whether the added depth is worth those changes.

The same principle applies to a different stone, revised upholstery or substituted light fitting. An attractive image of the replacement cannot show every consequence. A focused comparison should make the relevant changes understandable, without reopening decisions that the change does not affect.

A full interior-design appointment develops the interior and its agreed design packages. Design direction can guide work being authored by an existing team, through design reviews, material and furniture decisions, and coordination of proposals around a shared intent.

The working relationship needs to be clear. Identify who develops drawings, who reviews alternatives, which specialists resolve technical questions and who approves decisions. Agree how comments return to the team and when revised information will be reviewed.

The client should not have to interpret several disconnected presentations alone. Design direction brings those proposals into a conversation about the actual rooms and the next decision.

At Sikder Haus in Dhaka, AD’s appointment spanned interior design, design direction, bespoke development, engineering and importation. Executive rooms, boardrooms, reception and social spaces required choices at several scales, from room arrangements to commissioned details.

The boardroom view shows stone, seating and suspended lighting composed around the meeting setting. The wider headquarters also contains rooms with a different degree of formality. Design direction formed part of the integrated appointment, keeping individual developments connected to the broader interior.

A review has most room to influence the interior while a layout, material or bespoke piece is still open to development. Current drawings make the discussion specific: the team can see dimensions, adjoining work and the alternatives being considered. Once manufacture begins, some choices will be harder to change.

After the review, record the choice, the reason and what remains open. The revised drawings or specifications should reflect it. Where the question is fabrication, access or a technical interface, involve the responsible engineer or maker.
