Italian furniture pieces: choosing for the room
How to assess Italian furniture, lighting and storage as parts of a complete interior.
Start with the arrangement
A furniture shortlist becomes useful when it is tested against a plan. Decide where people sit, what they look towards and how they move through the room. A sculptural chair or generous sofa needs space around it, appropriate lighting and a purpose within the interior.
Eleven references, different roles
The earlier studio selection brought together Poltrona Frau’s Archibald, Giorgetti’s Progetti, Flos’s Arco, Kartell’s Louis Ghost, Molteni&C’s 505, Cassina’s LC4, Edra’s Boa, Minotti’s Hamilton, B&B Italia’s Up series, Porro’s Load-It and Artemide’s Tolomeo. These are references for different design problems: sitting, resting, storing and lighting. They are not an interchangeable list of luxury purchases. Availability and current configurations should be confirmed with the manufacturer before specification.
Test the relationship between pieces
Begin with the dimensions and use of the principal pieces. Check seating height against tables, chair clearance beside circulation routes, and the relationship between a floor lamp and the activity it serves. For shelving and storage, work from the contents and access requirements as well as the visible composition. Review physical finish samples together, in the light of the proposed room.
When a catalogue piece is not enough
A room may need a particular proportion, a material junction or a function that an existing collection does not resolve. Bespoke work should answer that requirement. The chess table shown here is an AD’ example: its playing surface, stone and supporting structure are developed as one piece.
