Hotel mock-up room approval: from one room to the next

Use the guest’s experience of one room to develop a clear design decision, then establish where that decision belongs across the hotel.

A guest has settled into bed with a book. The reading light falls where it should, but its control is awkward to reach from the pillow. Moving it within the bedside panel appears a small change. The position connects the guest’s comfort with the joinery, lighting and drawings that will guide the next rooms.

Hotel mock-up room approval should make those relationships visible. Record what has been tried, what needs changing and which configurations have been examined. A useful approval gives the appointed team a shared design reference, with unresolved decisions still visible.

Begin with the room as a guest will use it

Visit the mock-up with the room set for the proposed stay. Put the bed, pillows and bedside furniture in their intended positions. Try reading, putting the book aside and operating the light from the position the guest will occupy.

Look at the composition too. A control belongs within the pattern of panels, upholstery and light at the bed. Moving it should preserve the character of that setting while making the action comfortable.

Bring the current room drawings and lighting information to the review. The designer can examine the arrangement with the operator and relevant specialists, each contributing within the agreed project role.

Follow one change: MC-01

Consider an illustrative king-room mock-up, labelled K1. Its reading-light control sits towards the outer edge of the bedside panel. During the bed-position trial, the user has to lean towards it. The proposed change brings the control nearer the bed within that panel. The room codes, issue and document references below are invented for this example.

MC-01 recordDecision or evidenceStatus in the example
ObservationControl awkward to reach from the proposed pillow position; mark its location on the room elevation.Recorded against K1.
Design decisionTrial a revised control position within the bedside panel, retaining the intended panel composition and reading-light function.Position to develop with the joinery and lighting teams.
Revised informationJ04 Rev B, furniture schedule FS01 Rev B and lighting-control plan L02 Rev C describe the same change.Issued for the changed sample check.
Repeat trialWith the panel changed, repeat the action from bed and record the reviewed position in photograph K1-MC01-02.K1 check from bed complete; other configuration checks remain open.
Coordinated checkThe interior designer, joinery maker and appointed lighting-control specialist compare the changed K1 arrangement with J04 Rev B, FS01 Rev B and L02 Rev C.K1 revision match recorded; K2 and T1 remain pending.

The observation has become a specific design decision. Its application still needs examining wherever the room arrangement changes.

Carry the decision into the information people will use

In the example, J04 Rev B shows the revised control position on the bedside-panel elevation. Furniture schedule FS01 Rev B identifies the corresponding panel revision, so the maker can connect the item being ordered with the drawing being reviewed.

Lighting-control plan L02 Rev C carries the revised position and intended function. The responsible lighting and electrical specialists resolve the technical details alongside the joinery information, including the interfaces needed to make and service the assembly.

Record these references together under MC-01. The people preparing orders and installation information should be able to find the coordinated revision. Retain earlier issues as identifiable history, with their current use made clear.

Where the change affects price or programme, ask the responsible party to establish that effect before the relevant commitment. The person reviewing the room can then consider the spatial choice alongside its project implications.

Check the other room configurations

A second room may share the palette and furniture family while arranging the bed differently. Trace the action again against its actual layout. Mirroring the room can alter which side of the panel the guest reaches; twin beds introduce two sleeping positions to examine.

ConfigurationWhat has been examinedExample statusBefore its work is released
K1 — king, sample arrangementChanged panel tested from the proposed bed position.Check from bed complete.Match the checked arrangement to current documents and obtain the required technical and project approvals.
K2 — mirrored kingThe reversed bedside arrangement has not had its equivalent trial.Pending.Examine reach, panel composition and control function in the mirrored layout.
T1 — twinBoth sleeping positions and their relationship with the controls need review.Pending.Develop and check the twin arrangement with the lighting and joinery teams.

K1, K2 and T1 are labels for this exercise. A real project needs its own configurations and checks. MC-01 can close for the K1 trial from bed while the related K2 and T1 decisions remain open. Keep that distinction visible in the release information.

Agree who confirms the next step

The appointment and project approval procedure establish who develops revisions, reviews them and authorises the relevant commitments. An owner or representative, operator, designer, maker and specialist may each have a different decision to make.

For the bedside change, distinguish the guest-use observation from technical confirmation and the authority to release an order. Record the required reviewers, their responses and any outstanding action. A favourable room review should leave those responsibilities understandable.

Before repeated work proceeds, connect its scope with the configurations and document revisions actually accepted through that process. If a configuration remains pending, identify the work awaiting its decision. The reviewed sample and coordinated records should tell the same story.

Develop the detail with the whole interior

At Hotel Eden Spa in Rome, AD’s commission included reception, relaxation, the new wellness room and manicure and pedicure, from concept through handover. In a bespoke display, light travels through the worked edge of ultra-clear glass onto the wall. Glass fabrication, lighting and installation were considered together.

That is a separate hospitality detail, useful for understanding the relationship between an intended atmosphere and the information needed to develop it.

For a hotel interior, AD’s Interior Architecture & Design brings layouts, materials, lighting and bespoke details into the agreed design appointment, alongside the client’s architect, operator and specialists.

Discuss your hotel interior and the decisions ahead

Share the property’s location, the spaces involved and the stage reached. Include available plans, the operator and team already appointed, and whether a mock-up is planned or being reviewed. Your intended programme and investment range help frame the conversation.

AD’ can discuss the interior design scope and how its development would connect with the people and decisions already in place.
