A hotel brief may cover guest rooms, arrival and dining areas, a spa, or a defined refurbishment within an existing property. A useful shortlist connects the spaces you want to commission with a studio’s relevant work.

This selection introduces four Italian practices through published hospitality projects. It gives owners, operators and project teams specific references to explore, including the designers’ contribution and their relationship with the building’s architecture.

The article is published by AD’ Design Studio and includes our own practice. The profiles appear alphabetically; their order does not indicate rank.

What informs the selection

We considered published hospitality work, identifiable projects and documented design roles. A recognised hotel name becomes useful evidence when the designer’s contribution is clear.

Read each reference through the spaces involved and the interior work described. For your property, establish how that work would connect with the architect, operator and specialist consultants already involved.

AD’ Design Studio — Spa and restaurant interiors

AD’ is an Italian studio working internationally on interior design, technical development, materials and bespoke details.

At Hotel Eden Spa in Rome, AD’ shaped the spa’s reception and relaxation areas, the new wellness room and the manicure and pedicure room, from concept through handover. The commission brought together interior design, technical review, Italian sourcing and site coordination.

At reception, illuminated stone creates a focal point. Within the bespoke display, light follows the worked edge of ultra-clear glass onto the adjacent wall. Glass fabrication, lighting and installation were developed together. Rounded seating and framed reflections give the lounge a quieter setting before treatment.

For dining and bar work, KOI Restaurant in Bangkok provides a separate reference. AD’ worked closely with the owner, guiding the interior design direction alongside the appointed design team. Warm timber, a long counter and pendant lighting shape the main room. Booths, freestanding tables and private dining offer different seating settings; an illuminated bottle display gives the bar its character.

These cases offer two specific interiors to explore: Eden for the Spa appointment and KOI for owner-side design direction. The scope for your property is agreed around its spaces, design stages, bespoke development and the specialists involved.

Lissoni & Partners — hotel interiors within a wider architectural project

Lissoni & Partners’ interiors portfolio includes hotel commissions developed alongside architectural teams.

At Grand Park Hotel Rovinj, the lobby connects the restaurant and city-facing terrace. The interior scope extends through guest rooms, public areas and seafront spaces. Lissoni is credited for interior design; the building’s architecture is by 3LHD. The reference shows how arrival, dining, accommodation and the hotel’s setting can form a connected interior commission.

Spagnulo & Partners — hotel and Spa references

At Baglioni London, Spagnulo & Partners redesigned the lobby, reception, bar and restaurant around the hotel’s established identity. Black, grey and gold connect the areas; bronze and brushed brass enter the floors and furniture. Contemporary lounge seating sits alongside more traditional restaurant chairs, making continuity and difference visible within the shared spaces.

At Villa Gallici in Aix-en-Provence, oak, natural stone and rounded forms link the new Spa and wine-tasting setting with an existing Provençal villa. The two cases offer different hospitality references: renewing a hotel’s public interior and developing new guest experiences within a historic property.

Studio Urquiola — material and spatial research in hotel interiors

Room Mate Giulia in Milan gives Studio Urquiola’s hospitality work a distinct local reference. Pink marble in the lobby recalls the Duomo; terracotta bricks give a curved wall a sculptural surface. Graphic and geometric elements continue through the hotel, while the guest rooms have a domestic character.

The case shows how a city can inform the atmosphere through the materials guests encounter at arrival and in their rooms. It is a useful reference for an owner who wants a hotel to belong to its location.

Read hospitality through the change of setting

A hospitality interior is experienced in sequence. Arrival may need a clear focal point; waiting asks for another kind of attention; dining introduces a choice between social and more private settings. A shortlist becomes more useful when you identify which part of that experience you are commissioning.

At Eden Spa, AD’s reception and relaxation areas demonstrate that change. Illuminated stone and the bespoke glass detail give reception presence. Rounded seating and framed reflections make the relaxation area a quieter setting before treatment. The new wellness room and manicure and pedicure room belong to the same defined Spa appointment. This is evidence of those spaces, rather than a claim to have designed the entire hotel.

KOI Restaurant offers a different reference. The long counter, booths, freestanding tables and private dining create different ways to occupy the venue. AD’s role there was owner-side design direction alongside the appointed design team. The room can inform a conversation about dining, but its authorship and appointment should remain clear.

For your property, describe the change guests should experience between the spaces in scope. Identify the busiest shared setting, the quieter one and the detail that should hold their character together. Then connect that ambition with the operator’s practical brief and specialist input. For a new concept, develop your owner’s brief.

The profiles above offer examples of different hospitality contributions. Compare the rooms and design roles, rather than assuming that a hotel name establishes responsibility for every part of the property.
